Nicaragua is located
in Central America just north of Costa Rica and south
of Honduras on the Caribbean and just south of El Salvador
on the Pacific Coast. Nicaragua, in the eyes of many is
the "New" Costa Rica. With tourism booming in the country
it has become a popular place for foreign investment for
a variety of groups ranging from multi-national investment
firms to retirees to surfers and eco-tourists. As one
of the safest and least expensive countries in the western
hemisphere, the Nicaragua real estate market is still
booming even with much of the world in a recession.

Nicaragua is known as the land of volcanoes and lakes.
In addition to their beauty, the volcanoes benefit the
country in many different ways. For example ashes from
volcanoes fertilize the land for agriculture. Volcanoes
are a source for geothermal energy. Volcanoes are part
of the beautiful and natural landscape. Some of the most
important volcanoes are: Momotombo, the Mombacho, The
San Cristobal (the biggest one) and the Concepcion and
Maderas in the Ometepe Island.

Nicaragus is becoming a hot destination for surf tourism.
In a recent issue of Transworld Surf magazine, Popoyo
is named one of the top 10 surf destinations in the world.
While word has gotten out about San Juan del Sur, Popoyo
and the south Pacific Coast, the brilliant surf in the
north is still relatively untapped.

30 percent of the National territory is covered by tropical
humid forest and represents the richest and complex ecosystem
of the country. The conservation of this forest is a matter
of national and worldwide interest because places like
Zapatera Island, the Isletas of Granada, Mombacho volcano,
Santiago, Rio la Flor are places of natural, archeological
and cultural treasures.

Nicaragua's currency is the Cordoba, named after Francisco
Hernandez de Cordoba, the Spanish founder of the colony
of Nicaragua. The U.S. dollar is also an official currency
in Nicaragua, and it is advisable that travelers from
other nations bring currency in U.S. dollars. Major credit
cards are increasingly accepted throughout the entire
country. As of January, 2010, the exchange rate of Cordobas
to U.S. Dollars was about 20:1.
